What Has the Government Been Doing About Nuclear Safety?

The Japanese government consulted with the U.S. before releasing 11,500 tons of radioactive water into the ocean, but did not inform Korea beforehand. The Korean government has not even been able to set up a communication channel with Japan over the nuclear accident. And it only convened the first meeting among different ministries on Wednesday, 26 days after the explosion at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

The government has failed to explain to the public what it has been doing for the last 25 days to get an accurate picture of the situation and to ascertain whether or not Korea's 21 nuclear reactors are safe. The only information the public has received from a government agency are comments from Korea Meteorological Administration officials on TV explaining wind patterns around the Korean Peninsula and saying we have nothing to worry about.

The public's prime concern is how safe Korea's nuclear power plants are.
