Japan Plant to Get More Powerful Coolant Pump

Japan Plant to Get More Powerful Coolant Pump

A new heat removal mechanism slated for placement at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant could pump cooling water into the facility's No. 1 reactor 25 times faster than the current transfer rate, the Asahi Shimbun reported on Sunday (see GSN, May 6).
The new system -- designed to remove, cool and then return fluid from the reactor's containment vessel -- is capable of processing between 100 and 200 tons of water each hour, up from the 8 tons of water per hour now being transferred. The machine's deployment is part of an effort to prevent further radiation releases from the six-reactor plant, which was severely damaged in the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that left more than 20,000 people dead or missing in Japan.
