Groundbreaking Ceremony Planned for New FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company Emergency Operations Facility

PR Newswire
AKRON, Ohio, June 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE), will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday, June 15, at 7755 Auburn Rd., Painesville, Ohio, for a new Emergency Operations Center for the Perry Nuclear Power Plant.  The event will begin at 10 a.m.
FENOC officials, as well as representatives from Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula County government agencies, will be on hand for the groundbreaking.  Perry Vice President Mark Bezilla and Lake County Commissioner Ray Sines will address guests at the ceremony.
The new 12,000 square-foot Emergency Operations Center will provide overall management of activities related to maintaining public health and safety during the unlikely event of an emergency at the plant by using state-of-the-art equipment to monitor environmental conditions and communicate with state and local emergency representatives.  The facility also will be used during quarterly training drills and bi-annual emergency exercises evaluated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Construction of the new center is expected to be completed in January 2012.  Until then, the current Emergency Operations Center at the Perry Plant is available for operation.
