Report: Blizzard of '78 caused cracks at Ohio nuclear plant
The Blizzard of '78 is the root cause of the hairline cracks found in the concrete shield building of FirstEnergy's Davis-Besse nuclear plant, according to a report. A mix of high wind and heavy rain allowed water to penetrate the concrete, where it froze when temperature levels dropped during the storm, the report found. "With an effective exterior-protective sealant, the shield-building concrete laminar cracking will not repeat under the required combinations of extreme environmental conditions such as the shield building experienced during the severe blizzard of 1978," the study added.
