Report: Blizzard of '78 caused cracks at Ohio nuclear plant
The
Blizzard of '78 is the root cause of the hairline cracks found in the
concrete shield building of FirstEnergy's Davis-Besse nuclear plant,
according to a report. A mix of high wind and heavy rain allowed water
to penetrate the concrete, where it froze when temperature levels
dropped during the storm, the report found. "With an effective
exterior-protective sealant, the shield-building concrete laminar
cracking will not repeat under the required combinations of extreme
environmental conditions such as the shield building experienced during
the severe blizzard of 1978," the study added. The Blade (Toledo, Ohio)
