Message from National Grid

Important notice
We know that last week was a difficult and trying time for many of our customers.

We all worked together to pull through from Superstorm Sandy and now we are being challenged yet again. The national weather service is advising that a potential Nor'easter with high winds, rain and heavy snow is predicted across some of our regions. We have been closely monitoring this storm and are ready to respond as needed. We want to make sure that you are prepared too.
Please check to make sure you have bottled water, working flashlights, a battery operated radio and extra batteries in your home.
If you plan to use a generator to supply power during an outage, be sure to only operate it outdoors. To prevent serious injury, before operating generators, be sure to turn off the main breaker located in the electric service panel. Be sure to disconnect sensitive appliances, such as computers, televisions and microwaves, to avoid potential power surge damage when electricity is restored.
If you see a downed power line, do not go near it or drive over it, always assume it's live.  Consider all downed wires to be energized and dangerous, including telephone, fiber optic and cable TV wires. They may be in contact with energized wires that are not within your view.

To report downed power lines or an electrical outage, please call us: 1-800-465-1212. Please see below for more important tips:
Storm safety tips:
  • Limit opening refrigerator and freezer doors. Without power, food will stay six to nine hours in a refrigerator without spoiling. Frozen foods will keep about 24 hours.
  • If your home has flooding, check with an electrician before turning on anything.
  • If you anticipate an extended outage, consider moving yourself and your family - especially those with special needs - to an alternate location.
Consider checking on others who may benefit from your assistance.
Items to keep in a family emergency kit:
  • Water. The American Red Cross recommends one gallon of water per person per day.
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.
  • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food).
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio.
  • Flashlight and extra batteries.
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.
  • Blankets.
  • Emergency and key phone numbers.
  • Local maps.
  • Cell phone with chargers.
