Atomic Power Review: One of our best spokespeople, Simona De Silvestro

atomic power review

We all can name some top pro-nuclear spokespeople we know - whether they're known for standing in front of crowds, or TV cameras, or whether they're known more for their pro-nuclear advocacy on a more personal and direct level.

Here is one of our best public spokespeople - Simona De Silvestro. She drives the HVM Racing #78 car, a Lotus powered machine sponsored by Entergy Nuclear and labeled as the Nuclear Clean Air Energy car.

If you would like to see her advocacy in action, then click here to be taken to the APR YouTube Channel where her video is now featured.

Simona is racing tomorrow, August 26 at the Go Pro Indy GP of Sonoma. It will be televised beginning at 4:30 PM ET on the NBC Sports Networks. In some places, that might make it to broadcast TV over the air while in others you might need cable or satellite. Check your local listings.

Here are some further links to find out more about Simona and the team:

Tune in if you can and see how she does. The team has been having trouble this season with engine output, but is competitive on some tracks. Let's hope the GP format is what they need to move to the front this week!

"Cultural Signaling and Energy"

"Cultural Signaling and Energy"

At the Neutron Economy, Steve Skutnik asks the question of how much cultural signaling factors play a role in energy politics. Specifically, how much of support for energy sources like coal (and likewise, renewables) come more from that they say about the values and identities over more rational study of environmental and economic trade-offs?

China Ups Ante in Trade War with US

China Ups Ante in Trade War with US

China’s Commerce Ministry has reaffirmed an earlier decision stating that six US renewable energy projects are in violation of World Trade Organization rules, setting the stage for legal action against US solar and wind manufacturers.  This is part of the tit-for-tat renewable energy trade war between the US and China (and, increasingly, Europe), which began last year when the Coalition for American Solar Manufacturing (CASM), led in the US by Germany’s SolarWorld, filed a complaint with the WTO against alleged Chinese dumping…Read more...http://oilprice.com/Latest-Energy-News/World-News/China-Ups-Ante-in-Trade-War-with-US.html

Holtec targets making 1000 Modular reactors, Each 140 Megawatts at $800 million from Next Big Future by noreply@blogger.com (brian wang) The Holtec HI-SMUR 140 light water reactor was presented in 2011. (26 pages) It will be factory mass produced. Holtec, through its subsidiary, SMR L.L.C., is one of four finalists in the running for a $452 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The plan is for the U.S. to fund two small modular nuclear reactor designs that will become available for licensing and production by 2022. Holtec estimates it can build its new (140 MWe) plant for about $800 million. The company’s more likely future market is probably outside the U.S. The plant will need to sell 1,000 units to make the small nuclear reactors a financial winner.

In the News: Keystone XL Pipeline and Eminent Domain in Texas

The Keystone XL Pipeline situation took an interesting twist yesterday, with Judge Bill Harris of Lamar County Court at Law and his decision to uphold TransCanada’s condemnation of a 50-foot strip of land across a Texas plaintiff's land.  As reported by the New York Times, Plaintiff Julia Trigg Crawford plans to appeal Judge Harris' ruling which was apparently emailed to parties from his iPhone (text of the alleged 15-word ruling reported here). For those unfamiliar with the Keystone XL Pipeline Project, TransCanada has applied to the U.S. Department of State to obtain a permit to build a 1,179 mile pipeline from Alberta to Nebraska with possible extensions in Texas and Oklahoma allowing for easy access to the Gulf Coast.  TransCanada's initial application was denied, however, a second application is now being reviewed by the Department of State (DOS). The DOS is expected to make a decision on this pipeline in the early part of 2013. For more information about this issue see the related resources listed below:

Water and Power: Will Your Next Power Plant Make Both?

PLANT DESIGN
Water and Power: Will Your Next Power Plant Make Both?
Energy and water resources are inextricably intertwined, and globally, the noose is tightening around freshwater supplies. Though North America has been slow to adopt combination power generation/water desalination plants, circumstances may soon force it to join the movement that began on other continents.

THE FUTURE OF NATURAL GAS O&M and Human Stresses Caused by Low Gas Prices

THE FUTURE OF NATURAL GAS
O&M and Human Stresses Caused by Low Gas Prices
Though cheap gas seems like a good development?at least for gas-heavy generators? the effects it is having on everything from coal prices to worker morale to operation and maintenance issues at both coal and gas plants presents some challenging situations the industry hasn't had to face before.

Water Conservation Options for Power Generation Facilities

WATER MANAGEMENT
Water Conservation Options for Power Generation Facilities
Even in the U.S., where the power industry has been used to relatively easy access to freshwater for plant supply, the spigot isn't flowing as freely as it used to. Even if your company hasn't yet faced supply challenges caused by drought or other factors, odds are it will in the future, which is why you'll want to read the Electric Power Research Institute's review of available options for minimizing water use in new and existing power plants.

The Unlevel Playing Field for Energy

The Unlevel Playing Field for Energy

Geoffrey Styles, Energy Outlook
An editorial in last weekend's Wall St. Journal led me to a recent analysis by the US Energy Information Agency (EIA) summarizing the costs of the federal government's various "subsidies" for energy from different sources.  This is both useful and timely, since discussions of specific subsidies such as the expiring wind production tax credit inevitably lead to questions about how incentives for renewable energy compare to those for oil, gas, nuclear, and other more traditional sources.  As the Journal noted, the EIA stopped short of comparing these ...http://energyoutlook.blogspot.com/2012/08/the-unlevel-playing-field-for-energy.html

4 Roadblocks to Mitt Romney's Energy Plan

Darren Samuelsohn, Politico
Energy experts say Mitt Romney’s goal to achieve North American energy independence by 2020 would be almost impossible to reach — and anyway, there’s not much in what the Republican candidate laid out Thursday that counts as a concrete plan.Speaking in the energy production hotbed of southern New Mexico, Romney outlined goals that rely heavily on industry calls to remove federal oversight while approving the Keystone XL pipeline and opening up large swaths of U.S. coastline and public lands to more oil and natural gas drilling.http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0812/80051.html?hp=l1

Romney Energy Plan a Massive Pipeline Dream

Romney Energy Plan a Massive Pipeline Dream

Leon Kaye, Triple Pundit
Mitt Romney released his energy plan this week and touted it as an ambitious agenda to free the United States completely from overseas oil by 2020. Like many grand plans that presidential candidates dangle in front of voters, Romney’s energy independence plan will hardly be game changer in the November 2012 election. I personally believe Romney will win in a landslide that will be more reminiscent of 1980 than 2000 or 2004, and that shift will become apparent after Labor Day when most voters finally and begrudgingly tune in.http://www.triplepundit.com/2012/08/romney-energy-plan/

Romney's Plan Ignores the Success of Solar & Wind

Editors, Bloomberg
Mitt Romney sets an ambitious goal with his pledge to achieve U.S. energy independence by 2020. It’s just too bad his plan relies almost entirely on fossil fuels and largely ignores the solid promise of clean energy.Romney’s plan, rolled out Thursday in solar-friendly New Mexico, focuses heavily on oil, gas and, most unnecessarily, coal. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee promises to expand drilling on federal lands and to roll back environmental rules his campaign adviser Ed Gillespie says arehttp://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-08-23/romney-s-energy-plan-ignores-the-success-of-solar-and-wind-view.html
