Current situation of Fukushima Daiichi and Daini nuclear power station

Announcements

Current status of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS and Fukushima Daini NPS after the earthquake (M7.3) at the offshore of Sanriku at 5:18 pm on December 7, 2012.

[As for the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station]
After the earthquake occurred at 5:18 pm on December 7, 2012, we have conducted field patrols at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, and have found there was no problem.

* We will conduct field patrols for the equipments of the cooling system on the outside and the monitoring posts of Units 5 and 6 on December 8.

[As for the Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Station]
After the earthquake occurred at 5:18 pm on December 7, 2012, we have conducted checkups at the Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Station, and have found there was no problem.
Since we had found positive pressure in the reactor building of Unit 1, we have started Stand by Gas Treatment System* (the pressure was 0.05 kPa at that time of the start), and confirmed negative pressure in the reactor building. The negative pressure has been kept currently. We will conduct inspections for the cause of this matter.
The fluctuation of the monitoring post readings is being maintained within the range of normal fluctuation before and after the earthquake and currently no radiation impact to the outside of the power station has been reported due to the earthquake. The Unit 1 of Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Station is under the cold shutdown condition and there is no problem.

* Stand by Gas Treatment System: System that discharges air from the reactor building through exhaust stack to the outside. There are two systems; A and B. http://www.tepco.co.jp/en/nu/fukushima-np/index-e.html

What Are the Near-Term Climate Pearl Harbors?

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 03:12 AM PST
One of the media’s greatest failings is ‘underinforming’ people that “Bad things are happening to real people right now thanks in part to human-caused climate change — droughts, wildfires, flooding, extreme weather, and on and on.” If you have the right hypothesis or worldview, you can make sense out of “noisy” warnings. If you don’t, then you will be oblivious even to signs that in retrospect will seem quite obvious.http://theenergycollective.com/josephromm/154286/what-are-near-term-climate-pearl-harbors-what-will-take-us-procrastination-action?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=The+Energy+Collective+%28all+posts%29

Saudis eye solar-power exports to Europe

Saudis eye solar-power exports to Europe Saudi Arabia may have been the world’s top oil producer for longer than many people have been alive, but now it is turning its sights to a new type of energy to export: solar power.
People in Egypt and even Europe could one day turn on their lights with electricity transmitted from the vast bank of solar power stations that Saudi Arabia aims to build in coming years, according to a senior Saudi official and others familiar with the kingdom’s plans.
“This is a very ambitious programme and a very ambitious plan,” the official said, adding that although it could take some years to achieve, “the potential is really great, the potential is big and we believe Saudi Arabia will be major producers of solar energy”.
