An IAEA workshop to help build the capacity of European and African countries to prepare for, and respond to, nuclear or radiological emergencies is being held in Fukushima Prefecture this week.
During the workshop, taking place from 7 to 11 April 2014, 18 participants from 10 countries will strengthen their skills in radiation monitoring, environmental sampling and other related topics. The participants will take part in working sessions organized at the IAEA's RANET Capacity Building Centre in Fukushima City, as well as in field exercises in areas of Fukushima Prefecture that remain evacuated following the 2011 accident at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.
French, Japanese and Swedish experts are participating as lecturers in the workshop, organized by the IAEA's Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) as part of its work to strengthen Member States' emergency preparedness and response capabilities. The Fukushima Prefecture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan are supporting the workshop.
"By combining presentations, lectures and discussions with field exercises, this workshop helps participants sharpen both their theoretical and practical skills related to nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and response," said Pat Kenny, IAEA RANET Officer and Scientific Secretary of the workshop. "What they learn here will help them improve their emergency preparedness and response programmes at home."
In the week before the workshop, on 3 April 2014, the Governor of the Fukushima Prefecture, Yuhei Sato, visited the IAEA's RANET Capacity Building Centre for a short briefing. IEC staff welcomed Governor Sato and gave him a tour of the facility, and showed equipment that will be used in the workshop. Governor Sato thanked the IAEA for the support it is providing to the Fukushima Prefecture, and expressed his appreciation for the Agency's presence there.
RANET is a network comprising 24 countries through which the IAEA can facilitate the provision of expert support and equipment on request for assistance in accordance with the Convention on Assistance in the Case of a Nuclear Accident or Radiological Emergency.http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/2014/fukushimaworkshop2.html
