Minimising the gap between old and new reactors


Around one third of European nuclear reactors today are over 20 years old, and by 2015, more than half of them will be over 40 years old. While upgrading the safety of all reactors to the same level of new reactors is impossible, new innovations in inspection technologies are helping minimize this gap.

NRC to meet with Duke Energy to discuss apparent violation at Oconee

Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff will be holding a regulatory conference with Duke Energy officials on July 31 to discuss an apparent violation involving a crack in a weld on the Unit 1 high pressure injection system at the Oconee Nuclear Station. The Oconee plant is operated by Duke Energy near Seneca in South Carolina.

Holtec to build factory for its SMR-160

Small modular reactor (SMR) and spent fuel storage manufacturer Holtec is preparing to build a $260 million factory, reactor test loop and engineering building for its SMR-160 reactor and fuel storage technology.
