DOE Request for FOIA Documents regarding selection of Yucca Mountain

Alexander Morris, FOIA Officer, Department of Energy

In a few recent years the DOE has had discussions with other agencies concerning possible alternative uses of the Yucca Mountain facility. The designated “use” of Yucca Mountain remains Congressional Law and we believe that it is important that we “learn” how and why such alternative discussions have been initiated. Any other use of Yucca Mountain could be harmful to the “dormant condition” of the Yucca facility which would be counter-productive to its legal nuclear waste storage designation.

In regards to the administrations “transparency in Government” we are seeking Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) federal documents related to Yucca Mountain alternative discussions. If this is a politically motivated alternative obstruction for its “use”, in respect to our educational mission, USNEF needs to identify this agency dialogue for public education of our citizens.
