Cost, reliability of Massachusetts' electricity are at risk: Guest viewpoint

Over the next 15 to 20 years, the electric sector will require a $2 trillion investment to modernize the electric grid, including modernizing or replacing power generating facilities that have fueled our economic growth for generations. Amid this innovation, we will put the affordability and reliability of the entire electric system at risk if we fail to retain some key elements of the existing energy portfolio.
More specifically, while oil, coal and natural gas power plants can cycle in and out of operation rather quickly based on market trends and price changes, the nuclear power plants that produce nearly one-fifth of the nation's electricity cannot.
