Nuclear Power Companies Hit DOE With Waste Disposal Suit

As mentioned in: Law 360
May 29, 2015
A group of utility companies operating a nuclear power station in Kansas sued the U.S. Department of Energy, asking for the agency to fulfill its promise to remove spent radioactive fuel from their facility. Kansas Gas & Electric Co. and two other utility companies say they have collectively paid $224 million to remove spent nuclear fuel, but the fuel waste continues to sit idly at the facility, in some cases for 30 years or more. The utility companies are represented by Public Practices partner Alex D. Tomaszczuk, Energy partner Jay E. Silberg and Public Practices associate Clare M. Cavaliero. Can We Continue the Iran Interim Agreement Indefinitely

Can We Continue the Iran Interim Agreement Indefinitely

May 29th, 2015 |  http://www.lobelog.com/can-we-continue-the-iran-interim-agreement-indefinitely/#more-29436 by Ali Gharib
Earlier this week, Yishai Schwartz, an associate editor at the legal blog Lawfare, put up a thoughtful post on the Iran nuclear negotiations proposing an alternative to making a nuclear deal with Iran. His proposal?  Briefly stated, it is to more or less permanently extend the interim deal struck in November 2013, known as the Joint Plan of Action, or JPOA.
The notion holds a certain appeal that other alternatives lack, mostly for the reason Schwartz states: basically, there are no other alternatives on the table. Many proponents of the negotiations rightly fear that in the absence of a deal, Iran would have a free hand to expand its nuclear program, resulting in some sort of confrontation down the line. Schwartz’s proposal has the benefit of offering something else: continuing the restrictions on Iran’s program imposed by the JPOA and only conceding the limited sanctions relief it offers.
Schwartz claims that few critics of a deal articulate any alternative, let alone propose something like his plan. But that’s not quite right. In April, just after the announcement of a framework for a final comprehensive deal, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), one of the most rapacious Iran hawks in Congress, told CBS News he wanted to do just that. “Here is what I think we should do: continue the sanctions under the interim agreement,” he said. “That’s worked pretty well for the world. It has controlled Iran’s nuclear ambitions.”http://www.lobelog.com/can-we-continue-the-iran-interim-agreement-indefinitely/#more-29436

The darker side of solar power KONRAD YAKABUSKI

The darker side of solar power

It’s not clear if these voters would be as gung-ho about solar power, however, if they considered the environmental implications of its expansion. The industry doesn’t talk much, or at all, about the downsides of manufacturing solar panels or where all these panels will end up when they conk out. Think of how much toxic waste is generated by consumer electronics and you get a small inkling of what a world lit with solar power, and the batteries needed to store their energy, might look like.
Solar power is still a marginal energy source, accounting for about 1 per cent of global electricity production. Yet, its environmental impact is already considerable, according to the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition. The San Francisco-based group started out three decades ago tracking the e-waste produced by high-tech industry. It now produces an annual Solar Scorecard on panel manufacturers that depicts an industry that has got worse over time. Most producers refuse to provide any environmental data on their supply chains or manufacturing operations at all.
“We need to take action now to reduce the use of toxic chemicals in [photovoltaic production], develop responsible recycling systems and protect workers throughout the global PV supply chain,” the coalition said in its latest report.
