ROSATOM and Kenyan Council for nuclear energy signed a Memorandum of understanding in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy



June 23, 2016On May 30 of 2016 on the sidelines of the VIII International Forum «ATOMEXPO 2016» the ROSATOM and the Kenyan Council for nuclear energy have signed a Memorandum of mutual understanding and cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The document was signed from the Russian side by the Deputy Director General of ROSATOM Nikolai Spasskiy, and from the Kenyan side - by the Charge D'Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in the Russian Federation Mr. Hillary Ngondi Kyengo.
The Memorandum, for the first time in the history of Russian - Kenyan relations, is creating a basis for cooperation of the two countries in the domain of nuclear energy in a wide area of issues, including: assistance in development of Kenyan nuclear energy infrastructure; fundamental and applied research; design, construction and operation of nuclear energy and research reactors; production and use of radio izotopes in the industry, medicine, and agriculture; handling of radioactive waste; training and preparation of specialists in the field of nuclear physics and nuclear energy etc.
The Memorandum provides for creation of a working group for definition of mutually beneficial projects, promoting the realization of plans of the Kenyan side on creation of national nuclear energy industry, as well as other joint projects that represent mutual interest. The Parties have agreed to continue consultations on the practical implementation of the key Kenyan project - the first ever nuclear power generating plant, and the possibility of participation of ROSATOM in the project, including the construction of a new power station upon the Russian project. Among the immediate tasks, the Parties have agreed to conduct consultations on the issues of possible development and signing of an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the field of the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
