President's Message: Mind the Empathy Gap

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others.
In the context of nuclear weapons and conflict in areas such as the
Middle East, if individuals take the time to understand someone we now
perceive to be an enemy, would we be less likely to want to do harm to
that person or other members of his or her group? FAS President Charles
D. Ferguson encourages cognitive scientists around the globe to apply
research techniques regarding social challenges to bring people together
to work together to solve security challenges such as climate change
and nuclear disarmament.
