Bulletin of Atomic Scientists Friday, April 21, 2017

Friday, April 21, 2017

James E. Doyle

Proponents of mini-nukes, or of vague “limited nuclear options,” offer no convincing evidence that the United States needs new weapons in this category—or that they would make anyone safer.

Dan Drollette Jr

This is a good time to take another look at recent Bulletin stories that delve into the psychology behind what has been happening lately in North Korea. And discredit some common tropes.

Bob Frye's The Nuclear Requiem is now airing on PBS nationwide. WYCC has a broadcast scheduled for 8 p.m. on April 30th, with WTTW airing it on the same day at 6 p.m. Or watch online anytime at PBS. Check out the film's website or Facebook page for more details.

North Korea, missile defense, WIPP, MOX: If you don't receive the Nuclear Roundup in your inbox every day, you aren't doing it right.

Daniel Jassby

Long touted as the “perfect” energy source, fusion reactors share many drawbacks with fission—and even add a few new ones of their own.

The March for Science is on Saturday, and new research sheds light on how advocacy by scientists affects the way they are perceived.

Teen Vogue may not be the first place one would ordinarily think of when it comes to an article about North Korea and nuclear weapons, but a new relationship between the Bulletin and "TV" led to a terrific explanation on the North Korea situation by Science and Security Board member Sharon Squassoni. Teen Vogue will also be featuring Yangyang Cheng's Voices of Tomorrow piece, Let science be science again, as part of a special article about the March for Science on Saturday morning. Be sure to visit our homepage for more information.

The March/April issue of the Bulletin’s digital journal is now available! Read it before our next special issue posts in May.

April 22nd is not just Earth Day, it's the global March for Science. Find out everything you need to know about attending a march in your area, or about attending digitally through an online stream. The Bulletin will be present at the March for Science Chicago, and we'll have a booth at the Science Expo at the end of the march route; please stop by and visit us! Watch a recording of the Bulletin's Rachel Bronson, Sonny Garg, and Daniel Holz in a "Fireside Chat," hosted by the March for Science Chicago.

And be sure watch a short video produced by the March for Science London featuring Science and Security Board member Ray Pierrehumbert. Originally posted on The Guardian website, the video makes the case that: "The truth needs an advocate." Read John Cook's piece about how scientists can fight for science without losing trust for more information.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is pleased to announce that John Balkcom has been named vice-chair. Balkcom served on the Bulletin’s board from January 2012 through March 2014. He also served as board Chair from January 1, 2013 – March 1, 2014. We are grateful for his leadership, commitment, and long-standing support of the Bulletin.

More people are spending more time on our site than ever before. To continue to provide valuable information, and ensure we are there for decision makers when they call seeking expertise, we need your support more than ever.

March For Science, Or Against Republican Politicians?

March For Science, Or Against Republican Politicians?
by Henry I. Miller, Julie Kelly via Forbes
The April 22 March for Science, focused on Washington, D.C., but accompanied by some 400 complementary events worldwide, promises to be a motley affair. According to one of the young scientist-organizers, it is intended to help inexperienced science advocates develop the skills they need “to make their concerns heard” and to “have an effect on politics,” while maintaining a nonpartisan atmosphere.https://www.forbes.com/sites/henrymiller/2017/04/20/march-for-science-or-against-republican-politicians/#15b4503e3458
