Iran's Nuclear Deal: Less Popular There Than Here?

Iran's Nuclear Deal: Less Popular There Than Here?

Iran’s presidential election on May 19 will test whether negotiating the 2015 nuclear agreement with the United States and other powers has given the country’s reform-minded moderates a boost. The Obama administration hoped that reduction of economic sanctions under the agreement would strengthen the hand of Iranian politicians less committed to confrontation with the West.

Sure, the question of who is actually a moderate or reformist has always been hotly contested. In truth, very few Iranian politicians oppose the fundamentals of strict clerical rule. But some have wanted to engage more directly with the outside world while favoring fewer restrictions on speech, assembly and women’s rights.

American optimists hope that greater movement in that direction could be an opening wedge toward broader and more fundamental change in the revolutionary regime.

UCS Petition to Limit President's Power to Start a Nuclear War

Make Reducing the Risk of Nuclear War a High Priority

ACTION ALERT
Urge Congress to Limit the President's Power to Start a Nuclear War

President Donald Trump—like every president for decades—has sole authority to launch a US nuclear attack. And no one—literally no one—has the authority to stop such a launch. The saber rattling between the United States and North Korea is a stark reminder of why this is so outrageous and unacceptable.

It's time to change this deeply flawed system. Urge your member of Congress to limit the president's power to start a nuclear war. Congress must get more involved, working to reduce nuclear risks and prevent a nuclear catastrophe.

Here's a simple yet important step you can take. Write to your members of Congress and urge them to cosponsor the "Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act," which would prohibit the president—any US president—from launching a nuclear first strike without a declaration of war from Congress.

Introduced by Sen. Edward Markey (D-MA) and Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA), this bill can serve as a powerful vehicle to stimulate debate in Congress and get more members of Congress speaking out and demanding changes to a system that puts civilization-ending power in the hands of one person.

Join more than 25,000 UCS supporters who have already emailed their legislators. Your message is a key element of a coordinated national campaign involving dozens of organizations, to change our current policies, which increase the risk of nuclear war in very real and dangerous ways.

The Markey-Lieu bill is a small step in the right direction that allows you—and all of us—to demand that Congress takes these dangers seriously and works hard to change a system that puts all of our lives at real risk every day.
Sincerely,
Sean Meyer

OPEC Ministers Attend Conference In Iran
Washington’s working relations with the next president should not preclude it from leading the fight against the IRGC’s missile proliferation and regional militancy. Iran is a country at war, in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. Yet the candidates campaigning for the May 19 presidential election have hardly spoken a word about the country’s regional and military

From Kurt Couchman, Defense Priorities....

Calls for AUMF grow

Late last week, 46 House members of both parties led by Reps. Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Tom Cole (R-OK) sent Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) a letter urging debate on an updated authorization for use of military force against the Islamic State. The letter points out that Congress has not fulfilled its constitutional responsibility to decide this question.

Previously on April 11, 55 House members raised war powers concerns with Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis over U.S. assistance to Saudi Arabia in the civil war in Yemen. Now, a new letter from Reps. Mark Pocan (D-WI) and Justin Amash (R-MI) “asserts that any direct U.S. support for an offensive on the Houthis must be authorized by Congress.”
