NRC proposes 40-year license for on-site nuclear-waste storage

NRC proposes 40-year license for on-site nuclear-waste storage
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission wants to extend from 20 to 40 years the license period for nuclear facilities to store used fuel on-site. Plant operators keep used fuel at their facilities because the U.S. government has not fulfilled contracts to remove such material. Plans to construct a permanent national repository continue to meet setbacks. Energy Secretary Steven Chu has requested that a commission be formed to evaluate possible storage sites and explore reprocessing techniques. Bloomberg
