Shuler: Nuclear waste is not headed to Asheville area

The federal government is not planning to dump radioactive waste in western North Carolina, said Rep. Heath Shuler, D-N.C. This assurance came after rumors circulated among Madison and Buncombe county residents that the government was reviving an idea first raised in the 1980s to dispose nuclear waste in an area called Sandy Mush.
