Arab Nations Warned Against Pressuring Israel on Nukes

The Obama administration yesterday again cautioned Arab nations that they risk scuttling a planned 2012 meeting on establishing a WMD-free zone in the Middle East if they push a proposal demanding that Israel open its nuclear program to international scrutiny, news reports said (see GSN, Sept. 14).
However, those states today indicated they would not be deterred from increasing the pressure on Jerusalem.
The resolution, slated for consideration at next week's International Atomic Energy Agency General Assembly meeting, was floated by Arab states and adopted narrowly by the nuclear body in 2009. Israel is widely presumed to be the only nuclear-armed nation in the Middle East, although Jerusalem has neither confirmed nor denied possessing nuclear weapons.
