CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire officials are asking the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for an extra 90 days to consider whether they will seek a hearing on the license renewal application for the Seabrook nuclear power plant.
The deadline for requesting a hearing is next Monday. The state wants the extra time in part to see if new rules are put in place to shorten the time frame when power plant operators can apply for renewal.
Seabrook's license doesn't expire for another 20 years. The new rule being considered would prevent power plant operators from seeking renewal until the license is within 10 years of expiration.
New Hampshire officials say they will need to retain experts on nuclear engineering and the environment to assess the license renewal application.
