The huge capital outlay needed for the construction of conventional nuclear plants is forcing companies to explore the idea of developing small modular reactors, writes Gary M. Sandquist, a professor emeritus at the University of Utah. The advantages of small modular reactors over current designs could open a lucrative market for U.S. SMR developers and bolster the manufacturing sector, Sandquist argues.
