Over the last decade, primarily in response to the events of September 11, 2001, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations and policies have increased the expectation that licensed nuclear reactor facilities will have intrinsic defense capabilities. These requirements are based on the potential threat posed by radiological sabotage of large, base-loaded reactors currently in use in the U.S.
Can unique characteristics of advanced SMR designs, compared to existing large reactors, meet these increased requirements? What characteristics, when are part of the SMR design, provide functional requirements for security and monitoring during operations that give reasonable assurance of safety and security?
This webinar will try to provide the answers to these questions in exploring the compromises inherent in balancing safety, security, and emergency response as part of an advanced reactor design.
