Industry touts benefits of small modular reactors
Several industry representatives are touting the positive attributes of small modular reactors. They have lower capital costs than conventional larger reactors, and some designs could convert waste from the fission byproduct into fuel. "The advantage of the smaller one is: Even if you need 1,000 megawatts, you can put investment in piecemeal and generate money while the next unit is put in," said Aris Candris, president and CEO of Westinghouse Electric.
