Via the
NYT Green blog comes a
new survey by the Pew Center
indicating a smaller majority of Americans preferring further federal
funding of research into alternative energy technologies (specifically,
wind, solar, and hydrogen) as a priority over additional exploration of
oil and gas supplies. If the comparison seems to be a bit of a misnomer,
then you've already caught on to the idea that not all energy, as we
have it now, is fungible. Generally speaking, unless you are one of the
very fortunate Americans who can afford an electric vehicle (with
extremely generous taxpayer support at that), what is being posed is a
false dichotomy. All the windmills and solar panels in the world do
extremely little to curb demand for oil (and to a lesser extent, natural
gas, which may also stand in as a transportation fuel).
