Greenpeace Activist Paraglides Into Bugey Nuclear Plant (w/ video); EDF to Spend $500 Million on Security

A Greenpeace activist landed inside EDF SA’s Bugey site in a powered paraglider Wednesday morning in an attempt to "demonstrate the vulnerability of nuclear installations to a threat of an air attack," according to a Greenpeace statement.
Video footage from the stunt showed the activist dropping a smoke bomb onto the site and circling the reactor on his descent to the ground.
Laure Limousin, a spokeswoman for Paris-based EDF, confirmed the incident and said the pilot was held upon landing inside the plant, along with another person outside.
“Safety at the installation was never called into question,” EDF said in a statement. “Safety measures put in place at the end of 2011 allowed the detection and immediate arrest of the intruder.”
