House lawmakers work to revive Nevada repository
An amendment that would push the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to finish its review of the license application for the Yucca Mountain repository in Nevada is expected to be cleared by the House of Representatives. The amendment, offered by Rep. John Shimkus, R-Ill., would transfer $10 million from the Department of Energy's administrative account to the salaries and expenses of the NRC, to make sure the agency can complete its studies. "It is our belief that the commission has adequate funds to resume licensing activities for the Yucca Mountain project, as called for in the Nuclear Waste Policy Act," said Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Wash.
