High construction costs could hamper U.S. nuclear industry's growth

The cost of building new nuclear plants in the U.S. has increased significantly, and industry experts say that might hamper the growth of the country's nuclear industry. For instance, three nuclear plants in South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee have seen their projected costs increase by hundreds of millions dollars, and by about $2 billion in one case, The Associated Press reported. The Fukushima Daiichi incident in Japan and the low prices of U.S. natural gas also could cause utilities to be hesitant to invest in new nuclear reactors.
