  • First SRS plutonium shipment to N.M. was placed on hold in June
The first shipment of the Savannah River Site's plutonium waste to a disposal site near Carlsbad, N.M., was postponed in June after the Department of Energy revoked the approval of the documents defining the material to be transported from the South Carolina facility. The documents are being revised to address the delay, said Barbara Smoak, spokeswoman of Savannah River Nuclear Solutions. "Because this was a first shipment, there are a lot of documents going back and forth. This was all part of testing the process, basically, and the June time frame was a guesstimate," she said.
