Fukushima Beach Re-opens to Swimmers

Nakoso Beach in southern Fukushima prefecture has been opened to the general public:

It is the first of Fukushima’s 17 beaches to re-open after the 2011 tsunami and nuclear accident. The other 16 beaches are either still covered with tsunami debris or within the nuclear exclusion zone. According to television reports, many of the facilities at Nakoso Beach, such as the changing room and public toilets, remain heavily damaged. It will take some time for the area to fully recover.
The Asahi Shimbun has reported that no radioactive contaminants were found in the water, so it was deemed safe for swimming:
…officials declared there were no traces of radioactive substances in the seawater. Measurements of radiation levels at the beach are displayed there twice a day.
