The United Arab Emirates on Wednesday granted final approval for construction of its initial atomic energy facility by a group of South Korean firms, Reuters reported (see GSN, April 19).
Korea Electric Power and supporting entities received a deal in 2009 to construct four atomic reactors for supporting the emirates' burgeoning energy needs. One of the 1,400-megawatt systems is slated for activation in 2017; three comparable units would begin producing power in 2020. The new license covers two reactors.
This week's government move eliminated the final barrier for Emirates Nuclear Energy to begin assembly activities at the Barakah location (Maha El Dahan, Reuters, July 18). Concrete for the facility is expected to be laid on Wednesday in an inaugural move by the organization, the National newspaper reported (April Yee, The National, July 18).
The United Arab Emirates is set next year to enter negotiations with Korea Electric Power for the preparation of additional atomic units, Reuters quoted the South Korean firm as saying in April.
