If you think running a power plant is tough, try it while undergoing a vigorous growth plan.
That is exactly what Kansas City Power
& Light (KCP&L) Iatan Plant staff and employees did and were
able to win the prestigious PRB Coal Users’ Group Plant of the Year
award in the process. A PRB Coal Users’ Group Plant of the Year nominee
must
undergo an extensive review process including a visit by the members of
the Board of Directors. But Iatan was up to the challenge. And if going
through that review process was not enough, KCP&L was selected as
POWER magazine's 2011 Plant of the Year. This award is hand-selected
from several
hundred entries by POWER magazine's editorial staff and judging
committee. Hear from the plant about what makes Iatan worthy of such an
honor and what challenges they faced along the way. What processes
were implemented to secure this recognition?
If you know others who might be interested in this topic, please forward this email to a colleague.KCP&L was 7 years into its growth plan and the addition of Iatan unit 2 was only part of the insurmountable odds faced over the past few years. While preparing for their Open House Iatan was hit with the 2011 Missouri River flood. The station was able to continue operations throughout the prolonged summer flood which required all people, supplies and reagents be boated two miles across flooded corn fields.
