The IAEA's 2012 Nuclear Law Institute (NLI) is taking place from 23 September to 5 October in Baden, Austria. Organized by the Office of Legal Affairs, the NLI aims to strengthen the capacities of Member States in all areas of nuclear law including nuclear safety, security, safeguards and civil liability for nuclear damage.
The NLI provides the opportunity for legal experts or regulators employed by governments and relevant national agencies from Member States to be trained by well-known experts from the IAEA and other institutions while benefiting from modern teaching methods. It is expected that participants will acquire a solid understanding of all aspects of nuclear law and the necessary basic skills to draft, amend or review national nuclear legislation.
Background
Member States have long recognized that coherent and comprehensive national legal frameworks are essential for ensuring the safe and peaceful uses of nuclear energy. In the past few years, the growing number of international instruments and their complexity have increased the demand for assistance by Member States including the demand for training and capacity building in the area of nuclear law.
It is against this backdrop and following the positive feedback from the participants of the 2011 Session, that the Office of Legal Affairs decided to organize the Nuclear Law Institute as an annual event.
