Uranium Substitute Is No Longer Needed, but Its Disposal May Pose Security Risk
The
Department of Energy is faced with the challenge of the proper disposal
of uranium-233, a man-made substitute for natural uranium that is
classified as waste and can be used to create a weapon. The material was
seen as a suitable fuel for reactors, but ordinary uranium cost less
and proved to be much easier to work with. "There's no further need for"
uranium-233, said David Huizenga, senior administrator for
environmental management at the department. The New York Times (tiered subscription model)http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/24/us/uranium-233-disposal-proves-a-problem.html?_r=0
