Forging a New Nuclear Safety Construct Workshop Presentations Final Program Speakers Contacts Program Contact: Jennifer Delda Manager, Seminars & Workshops ASME +1 212.591.7108 deldaj@asme.org Registration and Hotel Contact: Kim Williams ASME Meetings +1 212.591.7037 williamsk@asme.org		Forging a New Nuclear Safety Construct Workshop Location: Washington, DC Date: December 4-5, 2012 Attended by 125 invited participants from 19 countries, the ASME workshop, “Forging a New Nuclear Safety Construct”, hosted by the ASME Presidential Task Force, was successfully held on December 4-5, 2012, at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel in Washington, DC.  PARTICIPANT LIST >>  The workshop was organized to provide leaders of the international nuclear community an opportunity to discuss the recommendations contained in the recently issued report “Forging a New Nuclear Safety Construct", seek consensus on the need for a new nuclear safety construct based on existing and emerging safety constructs, and obtain agreement on future actions that are needed to advance its essential elements.  The report was prepared by the ASME Presidential Task Force on Response to Japan Nuclear Power Plant Events.** It is the intent of the ASME Presidential Task Force that the workshop discussions will lead to concrete plans for a roadmap inclusive of those key actions that should be incorporated into a comprehensive safety construct for a post-Fukushima nuclear power complex, with worldwide applicability. The principal tenant is to foster ownership by responsible organizations to implement future actions worldwide. ASME’s primary role is to facilitate the discussions and interactions of regulatory and government organizations, non-government organizations and the industry, as they collectively determine the most appropriate response mechanisms and associated action plans. The Society will continue in its customary technical and standards role in support of the outcome of the workshop. = = = = ** The proposed new construct is aimed at enhancing the prevention and mitigation of extensive societal and economic disruptions that could be caused by major radioactive releases from accidents at nuclear power stations, increasing public safety and societal preparedness, and providing a strong platform for the continuation and growth of nuclear power.
