After Cyber Security Executive Order, Where Are the Business Opportunities?

President Obama in February issued an executive order that among other things calls on government and industry to work together to develop consensus-based cyber security standards and best practices that can be voluntarily adopted by owners and operators of private critical infrastructure to help protect their computer networks. Now comes the hard part…creating and implementing those new security practices.

The order also directs the federal government to share classified and unclassified cyber threat information with critical infrastructure owners and commercial service providers to help them react to threats.

The executive order is technology neutral, with the expectation that the private sector will benefit from a competitive market for products and services that meet the security standards.

Preliminary standards and best practices, which will be contained in the Cybersecurity Framework, are due in about eight months. This framework will provide the guidance that security vendors will be watching to make sure their products and services help reduce cyber risks to critical infrastructures.
