Hearing to Focus on San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant Closure

Sacramento - The permanent closure of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) creates many unique challenges for California including how to safely decommission the plant, how to replace 2,200 megawatts of greenhouse gas-free generation, and the future of plant employees. On Wednesday, July 10, at 9:30 a.m. in Room 4203 of the State Capitol, the California Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee, chaired by Senator Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima), will hold a public hearing to discuss these issues with energy utilities, regulators and grid operators.

The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) which consisted of three nuclear reactors began operating in 1968. It provided greenhouse-gas-free power to 1.4 million homes.  In 1992, the Unit 1 reactor was decommissioned while Unit 2 and Unit 3 reactors continued to provide power to Southern California.  During a planned refueling outage in January 2012, inspections of the Unit 2 reactor found unexpected deterioration of steam generator tubes. Soon after, steam generator tubes in the Unit 3 reactor failed, venting a small amount of radioactive steam.  Since these discoveries, both reactors have been offline.  On June 7th, Southern California Edison announced the closure of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).
