The Japanese government plans to develop new technology to cut the
potential environmental impact of high-level waste from nuclear power
plants. The plan involves extracting long-lasting radioactive substances
from spent nuclear fuel. By using neutrons from particle accelerators
it change them into shorter-lived materials. It is felt this will reduce
the amount of high-level waste by a factor of 100.
