NEI, NRC and Future Government Shutdowns

Wanted everyone on the list to know that NEI just published a letterfrom our CEO Marv Fertel to NRC Chairman Allison Macfarlane concerning NRC's operations during future government shutdowns. You can find the letter at the following link:

Some highlights:

* NEI is urging NRC to revise plans in case of future government shutdowns.

* Fertel: "Nuclear generation is key to ensuring grid reliability." As such, should revise criteria for processing emergency licensing actions during future government shutdowns.

* 90% of NRC overhead comes from user fees, not Congressional appropriations - fees that were still collected through past government shutdowns.

* Excluding the Pentagon, only 36% of Federal employees were furloughed. At NRC, the figure was 90%.
