Embracing Our High-Energy Planet
Conventional
narrative suggests that in order to avoid doomsday scenarios, we all
need to live simpler and smaller lives. In a talk at The Nantucket
Project, Alex Trembath argued the opposite. In order for all of the
Earth's inhabitants to enjoy the kind of energy security and prosperity
enjoyed in countries like Germany, we need to triple the amount of
energy consumption globally. This means that as we transition to greener
energy sources (which haven't arrived yet), we need to be pragmatic and
pursue a wider portfolio of energy options, from nuclear to natural gas
to "clean coal." It’s time to embrace a high-energy
planet.
