In April 2013, an attack on Pacific Gas & Electric's (PG&E) Metcalf transmission substation near San Jose, Calif. knocked the station out of commission. The attackers cut fiber optic cables and opened fire on the substation. Although the attack wasn't well-publicized in the media, it became a call for utility companies to reassess their security.
