Video: 900-ton Section of AP1000 Containment Vessel Placed at Vogtle Unit 4 Less than a year after performing the same lift at unit 3, crews last week lowered the containment vessel bottom head into the nuclear island of Vogtle unit 4. Both new reactors at the Southern Co. plant near Augusta, Ga., use the Generation III+ Westinghouse AP1000 design. To speed construction and cut costs, many of its components are manufactured off site or assembled into modules outside the nuclear islands and lifted into place. For the lift shown below, contractor Chicago Bridge & Iron used the construction site's 560-foot-tall heavy lift derrick to maneuver the 900-ton, 130-foot-wide CVBH into place.
