Networked Gadgets Waste 400 Terawatt-Hours of Energy Every Year
Let’s quickly put that number into context. If we closed the spigot on that astounding amount of waste, more than 100 coal-fired power plants—and their emissions—could be eliminated. Or a large country such as the United Kingdom could meet its entire power demand. According to a recent report from the International Energy Agency, the 14 billion networked video-game systems, printers, TV sets, and other gadgets consume nearly twice as much energy when they’re not active as they do when we’re using them. What’s going to happen when, by 2020, the number of networked devices surpasses 50 billion? http://spectrum.ieee.org/energywise/consumer-electronics/gadgets/networked-gadgets-waste-400-terawatthours-of-energy-every-year/?utm_source=energywise&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=071614
