Survey: Climate Experts Favor Retiring Coal, Keeping Nuclear

In the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, Japan and some of the world’s other major proponents of nuclear energy made plans to radically cut fission from their energy mixes. But these policy initiatives may be just temporary shifts. In a recent survey, a panel of leading climate experts said we’re better off dealing with the risks that come with nuclear plants than the certainty that, by continuing to operate coal-fired plants, we’ll exacerbate global warming. In fact, they said, nuclear power will play a crucial role in any plan to stabilize the effects of global warming until our abilities to harness wind and solar energy are sufficient to meet growing demand. http://spectrum.ieee.org/energywise/energy/nuclear/experts-favor-retiring-coal-keeping-nuclear/?utm_source=energywise&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=073014
