News Regarding Westinghouse close to deal of USD 20bn for 26 Chinese NPPs is Fake

Chief Executive Officer at Dynatom International GmbH

An eye-catching news on Westinghouse has reached agreement with China to nearly USD 20 bn involving 26 inland nuclear power plant construction contracts has been reprinted on Chinese big websites after being translated by some website, but this is a false news. It originally appeared on local media of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, with title of “China showed interest in Westinghouse signing new contract of USD 2bn”.

Several common mistakes are included in this news.

1. China has so far no plan to restart inland nuclear power plant. Even if it will be started during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, it is limit to start. It is not possible for China to negotiate with Westinghouse now for the order, if so; it can not be related to 26 nuclear power plants. In the original news, there is no similar words appeared in the direct speech of the executives of Westinghouse. Information source provided by the reporter that 26 nuclear power plants contract of USD 20 bn is lack of authority.

2. If we calculated it by USD 20 bn for 26 nuclear power plants, then there is less than USD 1 bn for each nuclear power plant. According to the cost of AP1000 nuclear power plant at present, it is impossible and there has no million-kilowatt unit in the globe could have such low price including the second generation, third generation and all other types of units.

3. In accordance with the contract signed between China and America, China won the bidding of AP1000 and will have technology transfer, therefore, besides the supporting project, the subsequent AP1000 project will be contracted by China Nuclear Power Engineering Co.,Ltd, while Westinghouse only provides the technical support. Westinghouse should not be involved in selling nuclear power plant to China for the subsequent projects. Previously, news released by Reuters and other media that Westinghouse to sell eight nuclear power plants to China etc are all fake. However, as technical support side, Westinghouse will definitely participate in the following projects in a certain way. Timothy Collier, General Manager in China gave an authority answer that in fact Westinghouse is also looking for the answer on which role should they play.

At present, Westinghouse is still discussing with Chinese companies.
