How can anyone feel confident of nuclear safety?

How can anyone feel confident of nuclear safety?

Edison has been trying to avoid a more detailed review of what what wrong with the replacement steam generators at SONGS (San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station). Edison designed the replacement steam tubes that were fabricated by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. According to the resident nuclear safety engineer, there was a change in the alloy used. The NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) did not require a re-licensing hearing about the replacement steam tubes because the replacement steam tubes were allegedly "similar." There is now a "controversy" about whether there should have been a re-licensing hearing. The NRC and the California Public Utilities Commission both have tried to avoid this vital public safety issue. Meanwhile, the ratepayers would pay $3.3 billion of the losses and utility company shareholders would pay only $1.4 billion.
