GE Hitachi Says It Will Expand NPP Servicing To Include Pressurized Water Reactors

GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy said it would make a formal announcement Tuesday to declare it will enter the service market for pressurized water reactors made by competitors.

The company traditionally specializes in design, construction and servicing of boiling water reactors, but GEH said it is expanding its services portfolio in part to provide consistency for nuclear plant owners that operate both types of reactors. “These BWR customers that have PWR plants would like the opportunity to use a single vendor sometimes,” said GEH senior vice president of nuclear services and fuels Kevin Walsh in a statement.

GEH said it will be seeking contracts to service PWR plants during routine outages and that it had already secured its first PWR service deal with Exelon Corporation, the country’s largest nuclear plant operator with 22 reactors in its fleet. These include 14 BWRs and 8 PWRs.
