Report: Replacing Existing Power Plants Expensive, Counterproductive

  • Nuclear plants have among lowest levelized costs of electricity
  • Undervalued markets, renewables subsidies driving some plants to early retirement
  • Considering levelized costs of existing and new facilities could help policy decisions
July 16, 2015—Policymakers reaching decisions affecting the cost of electricity in the United States must come to grips with the higher costs that will result from replacing existing low-cost electricity generating facilities, a new study shows.
The Institute for Energy Research (IER) report “The Levelized Cost of Electricity from Existing Generation Resources” includes the finding that nuclear energy has among the lowest average costs of electricity for both future and operating facilities.
