Hanging Out With Nuclear Matters

Hanging Out With Nuclear Matters

Last week, Nuclear Matters hosted a Google Hangout with noted economist Dr. Larry Lindsey. Felix Meissner, Past President of the North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN), posed questions from Nuclear Matters Partners [ http://www.nuclearmatters.com/about/partners ] about the value of our nuclear fleet.

Google Hangout [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9UratS3n40 ] Dr. Lindsey, Nuclear Matters' newest Leadership Council member [ http://www.nuclearmatters.com/blog/views/americas-existing-nuclear-fleet-gains-a-new-ally ], grew up near a nuclear plant and saw how it positively impacted his local community first hand. What else did we learn? Check out these takeaways:

*1. Nuclear energy plants are key to a healthy economy, **contributing $60 billion to US GDP (and supporting 475,000 jobs!)*. In fact, Dr. Lindsey said he "couldn't imagine" the US economy functioning without at least our current fleet.

*2. Nuclear plants are also economically beneficial because they avoid harmful emissions, **like carbon**. *Our fleet saves us $33.4 billion each year for being emission-free.

*3. Nuclear plants contribute to a diverse energy portfolio - and that's important.* As Dr. Lindsey described, maintaining a diverse energy mix means we have a more reliable grid and energy supply, and can keep prices lower for consumers.
