A one-week course on nuclear and radiological leadership for safety is now open for application. The IAEA is looking for junior and middle management nuclear professionals with proven leadership potential to participate in this training.
The course, to be held 30 October to 3 November 2017, at the UniversitĂ© CĂ´te d’Azur in Nice, France, is a pilot for the IAEA’s newly developed International School of Nuclear and Radiological Leadership for Safety.
The School, envisioned to be held annually, aims to help early to midcareer nuclear and radiation professionals advance their safety leadership skills to benefit them and their workplaces throughout their careers.
Case studies, presentations, key note addresses, exercises and discussions will guide participants to a better understanding of what leadership for safety means in practice in nuclear and radiological working environments. The course will enable participants to demonstrate leadership for safety, as envisioned in the IAEA’s General Safety Requirements on Leadership and Management for Safety (GSR Part 2).
The pilot course and the School will help IAEA Member States apply the concept of leadership and management for safety in practice, said IAEA Deputy Director General Juan Carlos Lentijo, Head of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security.
“By developing the skills of future leaders, we ensure the sustainability of nuclear safety,” he said. “School participants will be well-equipped with the behaviours, attitudes, and skills necessary to ensure that safety is adequately prioritized at their workplaces throughout their careers.”
The programme will focus on the application of nuclear and radiological safety leadership concepts to real-life situations. The School complements existing courses, many of which are intended for senior leaders, by targeting professionals in the early stages of their careers.
The School targets junior and middle management professionals from regulatory bodies, licensed operators or users or related entities. Applicants should have university degrees and have demonstrated leadership potential through professional achievements. Applications are due 25 August 2017. See more details here.
