Delegation from the Philippines Visits the IAEA Office of Legal Affairs to Discuss Nuclear Law Matters
The IAEA legislative assistance programme plays an important
role in assisting Member States to develop and strengthen their national
legal frameworks as they seek to benefit from the peaceful applications
of nuclear technology in electricity production, medicine, industry,
agriculture and in many other areas.
The visit of the delegation from the Philippines, hosted from 11 to 13 July 2017 at IAEA Headquarters, was part of a longstanding cooperation between the IAEA and the Philippines, with a number of IAEA legislative assistance activities having already been conducted with the country in the past. The delegation from the Philippines was composed of members of Congress as well as decision-makers involved in overseeing nuclear activities in the country.
The visit aimed to provide an overview and raise awareness about the importance of joining and implementing the international legal instruments adopted under IAEA auspices. It highlighted the significance of having comprehensive national legislation in place to ensure the safe, secure and peaceful conduct of activities involving the use of nuclear technology.
“The meeting provided exhaustive information and outlined the basis and rationale for advising our lawmakers on establishing a comprehensive nuclear regulatory framework in the Philippines including the creation of a Philippine Nuclear Regulatory Commission” said Maximo B. Rodriguez Jr, Congressman, 2nd District, Cagayan de Oro, the Philippines. “The Law should be drafted to ensure the safe and peaceful uses of nuclear energy that can provide important benefits in many fields, including health and medicine, energy production, scientific research, agriculture, industry, and education.”
